A wireless Internet service provider (WISP) is a kind of Internet service provider (ISP) that allows its subscribers to connect to internet at designated hot spots (access points), using a P2P (Point to Point) or P2MP (Point to Multi Point) using a wireless connection such as Wi-Fi.
As quoted on Wikipedia :
Typical Wireless Access point looks like this :
A WISP offers wireless broadband service and allows subscriber computers which are called stations, to connect to the Internet from anywhere within the coverage zone of the AP (Access Point) antenna.
Typical coverage region is up to several kilometers in radius.
The simple example of a WISP is a Base Transceiver Station (BTS) or basic service set (BSS) which conists one server and many stations all linked to that server by wireless using P2P (Point to Point) or P2MP (Point to Multi Point) connections.
A more sophisticated WISP network employs the Repeaters or extended service set (ESS) topology, consisting of two or more BTS linked together using a P2P connection. Both BTS and Repeaters use Wireless Technology (WiFi)
